Artist statement; wat is je specialisme, wat maakt jouw werk uniek?

I have a great interest in the human body, inside and out. My previous projects were about being deaf/blind, hair cuticles, decapitation and viruses.
I shaped each project according to my own imagination and fantasy. An example of this is my project ''Hoesowell''. From my own fantasy drawings I made a creature-like object.
That's how I started my graduation project, based on a fascination for brain scans. The round shapes that flow into each other, built on layers with an addition of colors.
The fact of the brain scans was a very good addition to my drawings of creatures. In my view the creatures are an alienation from man himself, a bizarre image of mankind. Large hands, feet, eyes and lips are characteristic and their core values are reflected in my current designs.
The aim of both facets is that each outfit gets a new character, like my drawn creatures. That it gets the layers, shapes and colors of the brain scans and with that also a brain-like fabric processing. The creatures become a second skin for the wearer. By putting it on you transform into the being. The wearer does not step into my fantasy world, but the wearer creates his own interpretation in his fantasy world.
Thereby is my collection with three sculptural, and three ready- to-wear pieces a new beginning towards Brainparade. Whereby I look at the same subject different each time.

Wat zijn je ambities? Wat wil je over vijf jaar bereikt hebben?

After graduating I would like to focus on my own company called Femke. I want to start a pencil skirt collection because I like to wear it every day. I also want to focus more on designing and drawing prints. There are several exhibitions in London in which I want to participate and I also want to see to what extent I can expand Brainparade. (for example a stuffed animal collection)
In 5 years I want to have a well-run company and it seems interesting to me to do collaborations with other creative/brands.

Wat is het belangrijkste dat je hebt geleerd tijdens je studie?

When I look back on my HKU career I am very grateful for everything I have experienced and learned. I think the constant experimentation and the amount of feedback really helped me to take a critical look at myself. If I compare myself with the girl from 4 years ago, I hardly recognize myself again, I have grown in my personality, creativity and productivity. School was a safe haven to discover that. I think those are the ingredients for emerging as a designer.
