What is your specialty, what makes your work unique? Or place your artist's statement.
I’m Sanne Brouwer, a filmmaker and animator. In my films, I translate internal mental workings into visual narratives using a mix of analogue and digital techniques, approachable character art and rich, harmonious colours and compositions.
My work often has an otherworldly element and a gentle, safe ambience to it. The films I make aim to move the viewer, engross them in my stories and make them think about life
I’m driven by a desire to tell stories and a love for motion, as well as a deep appreciation for art and narration as a means to bring people together
What are your ambitions? What do you want to be in five years?
In the years after graduating, I aspire to start a studio with my friends and fellow students. I definitely want to keep directing personal films besides working on commissioned work and commercial projects, but I wouldn’t mind a detour into character animation for bigger productions in Europe.
What is the most important thing you have learned during your studies?
During my time at HKU, I had to find a balance between depending on my intuition and being able to justify the creative choices I make. A lot of my development revolved around learning to trust myself as a creative, finding the right way to work for me personally, but I also just got a lot of practice with animation, backgrounds and narrative structure! And, above all, I learned how important the people around you are, both your peers and your support system.
