Marijn Wolthuis

Both through painting and sculpture Marijn Wolthuis investigates the transformative qualities of the subconscious, helping us to reconsider our existence. While both mediums function in their own right, Wolthuis’ paintings and sculptures are connected and are often presented together to enhance each other’s qualities. As the sculptures provide a three-dimensional space and location for the spectator to discover, they are brought into an environment, while also bringing a sense of texture that the paintings cannot convey.
Complementary to the gravity and physical limitations of the sculptures, Wolthuis’ paintings show a dreamlike world in which anything is possible and timeless, and the surreal is allowed to manifest itself unlimited by anything but imagination itself. In these dreamscapes, Wolthuis’ sculptures embody the performers in the paintings, materialising in reality. Presenting them both together, Wolthuis intends to build a space not just for his own creations, but that also allows him to collaborate with other creatives to continue the work. His dreamscapes are never finished, embodying the continuous energy of transformation, rather than creation or destruction.

What are your ambitions? What do you want to be in five years?

Ik wil graag verder in het maken van installaties waarin dansers (choreografen) kunnen ontwikkelen met de materialen in een opbouw. Ook zou ik graag met het toneel en acteurs willen werken in relatie tot mijn sculpturen. (Natuurlijk kunnen ze in beide omstandigheden sculpturen of installaties werken.

Los daarvan wil ik graag verder studeren aan de HKU om opgeleid te worden op het gebied van docentenschap. Mijn doel is om in drie tot vier jaar naar Hawaii te verhuizen waar ik een aantal connecties heb in de kunst (scholen). Mijn ambitie is om naast het maken van kunst en docent zijn ook les te geven in SCUBA-diving. Ik ben opgegroeid in de Caribbean, dus wil terug naar mn natuurlijke omgeving.

What is the most important thing you have learned during your studies?

hoe ik over mezelf en mijn werk praat of schrijf - dat het niet zo zeer gaat om iemand te overtuigen om het werk volledig te begrijpen - maar meer om het werk te zien zoals het is met daar boven hun eigen eisen en relativiteit/ interpretatie.

En voor mezelf - het maken van sculpturen vanuit mijn schilderwerk. Het was een droom dat met genoeg moed werkelijkheid is geworden.
