Elodie Karres
In making her works, Elodie Karres operates not unlike a hunter-gatherer. Following her instincts, she collects and accumulates objects and materials that breathe an unknown history. Some of these objects are of natural origin, such as feathers and branches, while others are man-made, but rusty, weathered or eroded, showing clear signs of being touched by the passing of time.
Gathering objects and collecting them in an archive, Karres’ works are made in a swift realization that echoes a holistic approach to life and that builds on material contrasts as a marker of the dualism Karres experiences everyday. Speed is of the essence, as she both seeks to avoid getting stuck in tinkering with the work, while wanting to evoke a sense of rhythm and poetry by materializing something that you know deep down but cannot feel deliberately. When picking her materials, then, Karres is looking to get intrigued by what she does not recognize or understand, solidifying her philosophy of life by utilising the characteristics of the materials and objects in her work.
