Artist statement; wat is je specialisme, wat maakt jouw werk uniek?

Sara Haver

The colourful works of Sara Haver emerge from her playful attitude towards life. Fascinated by the intuitive choices we face everyday, her paintings display multitudes of colourful mugs and socks; exactly the kind of trivial objects that we regard as insignificant, but that can tell entire stories about the person who owns them. As they appear as uniform objects, they individually exist in a huge variety. This allows Haver to continuously play with their appearance, focussing on the joy of painting and the process of deciding between colours, shapes and compositions.

With a bold optimism, Haver works from this process to keep challenging herself. She does not just do this in her large and vibrant paintings, but also in her language-based works in which she freely dismantles grammar, speech and meaning. For Haver, the joy is in making these relatively small decisions and showing that even a simple choice can be a tremendous moment. Life, according to Haver, is the kind of puzzle that does not need solving, as long as you enjoy puzzling.

Wat zijn je ambities? Wat wil je over vijf jaar bereikt hebben?

Over vijf jaar, vanaf vandaag zou dat zijn: juni in 2026. In die tijd wil ik dat mijn artistieke praktijk een deel van mijn leven uitmaakt. Zoals het altijd een activiteit is geweest waar ik mij mens door voel, waar ik gelukkig van wordt, wat mijn uitlaat is. Een passie die ik niet weg zal laten ebben, maar één die gedeeld moet worden met al het ander moois wat de wereld te bieden heeft. Kunst is een gevolg, je leven is de oorzaak.

Wat is het belangrijkste dat je hebt geleerd tijdens je studie?

Onderschat jezelf niet. Ik leef niet voor de kunst, de kunst leeft door mij.
