Verekseseerd i baar jeld
After conversations with my grandparents, who live in Kerkrade Zuid-Limburg, in the region where coal used to be mined, I created an installation and a metaphoric ritual that for me translates the history of Kerkrade while also illustrating the parallels that I see within the history or Kerkrade, the resource curse, exploitation of anonymous workers, and my own work as a (mostly) ceramic artist. This I did by digging a hole in the Kerkraadse ground, finding clay, shaping this clay into a protector/worker/anonymous person. I left the clay in the ground, a signal that I (the capitalist) won't strip them of their riches again.
The ritual was filmed and is now an integral part of the installation as a video.
This video and installation can be viewed at;
